An Advanced MxPro multiprotocol fire system has been installed at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court, comprising a total upgrade of the previous fire system to L1 requirements.

The original, single loop addressable fire system had been renewed at various points previously, but was no longer fit for purpose. The Estates team specified a new analogue addressable system with high sensitivity smoke detection in the custody suite, together with an automated Voice Alarm (VA) system.

There was no possibility of closing the building while the upgrade was made, so installation of the new fire equipment had to take place out of hours. This was not the only challenge on the project, as John Angell, Contract Manager, Network Fire & Security, explains:

A modular voice alarm system is included, which comprises three master and five slave units. It is pre-programmed with a series of automated messages that are activated in the event of an alert, but there is also an option for manual intervention to broadcast bespoke messages using a microphone. If an alarm is raised by devices within the courtroom areas, evacuation procedures are initiated in these zones and an alert is transmitted to the custody suite. Equally, should an incident be detected in the custody suite this area will be evacuated immediately and the court areas are put on standby.

Wexham Park Hospital, an acute NHS hospital situated near Slough in Berkshire is protected by a network of 20 MxPro 5 fire panels from Advanced.

The 588-bed hospital is one of three managed by Frimley Health NHS Foundation trust, one of the top performing NHS trusts in the United Kingdom. As well as the main hospital building, the site has a large post graduate building, ambulance station, staff accommodation and a new £49 million, state-of-the-art, four-story Emergency Assessment Center. Responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the system was Advanced’s partner, Static Systems Group, who install Advanced under their brand name, Evo2.

In addition to the MxPro 5 panels, the system also comprises 18 MxPro 5 repeater panels and 2,000 Apollo field devices installed in a number of hospital buildings and departments including Intensive Care, Sterile Services, Radiology and its new 9,300 sq. meters Emergency Assessment Center.

MxPro 5 is the fire industry’s renowned multiprotocol fire system solution and was recently certified by FM Approvals to the EN 54 standard. It offers customers a choice of two panel ranges, four detector protocols and a completely open installer network, backed up by free training and support. The Bulgarian Ministry of Education is protected by an Advanced ExGo extinguishant control system.

Charged with regulating education and promoting scientific work in Bulgaria , the Ministry was founded in 1879 as the Ministry of Popular Enlightenment and existed under that name until 1947. The name of the Ministry changed numerous times until 2009, when it was renamed the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science, before reverting back to its current name in 2013.

A recent upgrade of the fire systems saw Advanced’s ExGo suppression system installed in the main archive room, supported by optical smoke and air sampling detection, LCD+LED indicators and remote indicators.

The ultra-dependable ExGo extinguishant and suppression control system has been developed specifically for sensitive and strategic assets such as server rooms, historic and cultural attractions and control rooms. The system installed at the Ministry of Education and Science has 28 components and is connected to the existing fire alarm control panel in the building. ExGo is suitable for almost all single-flooding area applications and include a range of control options and devices. It is approved to EN54 parts 2,4 and 13 and EN12094-1 and is among the first systems to combine these with EN12094 in a single solution. EN12094-3 relates to the integrated manual release on the front of the panel. ExGo can be integrated into Advanced’s Axis EN fire system or any third party alarm system.

The Tyne and Wear Metro system, widely considered the first modern light railway system in the UK, is being protected by MxPro 5 intelligent fire panels from Advanced.

Nexus, the public body which owns and manages the Metro, upgraded fire panels at 50 locations on the system, including 21 stations and other key pieces of infrastructure, including relay rooms, vent shafts and other operational buildings.

Many of the busiest subsurface Metro stations in the centre of Newcastle and Gateshead were part of the project, including Monument Metro Station which is used by 10 million passengers every year. The project was part of the £389m ‘Metro All Change’ modernisation programme, which involves the refurbishment of Metro stations, trains, and other key infrastructure in an 11 year programme.

MxPro 5 fire panels have been installed on the system, which has the fastest passenger growth of any light rail network outside of London.

A networked fire system driven by Advanced MxPro multiprotocol fire panels has been installed in Derry Guildhall, Derry Londonderry, Northern Ireland, following a £9.5m restoration of the building that lies at the heart of the former UK City of Culture.

The Guildhall, which reopened in June, is one of the city’s main cultural assets, dating from 1890,  and has played an important role in the history of the City. The refurbishment has restored the building and delivered new facilities. It will remain the home of Derry City Council and its mayoral office, hosting the Council Chamber and Mayor’s Parlour as well as a new café, outdoor terrace, an exhibition space and historical display detailing the 400 year history of Derry and its central role in the history of the entire country.

Advanced’s MxPro panels are the leading intelligent, multiprotocol, fire control panel, offering unmatched performance and quality across a choice of detector protocols, with an open installer network and delivered with free training and support. MxPro panels come in 1 to 8 loop variants can run as stand-alone panels or large 200 node networks and work with Apollo, Argus, Hochiki and Nittan protocols. Apollo’s XP95 protocol and devices are used throughout the installation.

In addition, a Wagner aspirating smoke detection system is interfaced with the Advanced panel, which also manages gas and air handling shutdown. A three minute investigation delay is programmed into the system using Advanced’s simple DynamixTools configuration software and a DDA paging system is interfaced via RS485, delivering full text data on system status and offering fire pager alerts to the hearing impaired.

As part of a major upgrade at the Royal Albert Hall, six networked MxPro 4 intelligent control panels from Advanced were installed.

These panels have been fitted with ipGateway to enable the system to be monitored over the Internet using a standard web browser.

The ipGateway is a fully interactive Internet portal that provides a detailed description of the system and reports its current status. The ability to remotely interrogate the fire system is a valuable benefit to the end user and Leader Systems, which can identify problems before they actually happen and reduce unnecessary journeys to site.

The MxPro 4 four-loop panels are connected to over a thousand Apollo and Xpander devices. There is also condition monitoring of all dampers via a bespoke LED mimic panel. Overall monitoring and management of the system is achieved with Advanced’s PC-NeT graphics software running on a standard PC connected to the fire network.

The MxPro 4 panels have sophisticated cause-and-effect programmability and powerful I/O capability — as demonstrated by a simple mode-change facility. Royal Albert Hall’s maintenance team can change the mode of specific detectors during a performance via a simple key switch connected to one of the panels.
